Mother's day
May. 9th, 2002 05:20 pmMY mother did not give birth to me.
I see my mother almost every day.
I tell my mother "I love you" every time I see her and I mean it.
No matter how angry I get or how long it is since we talk, I never forget how much I love my mother because SHE raised me and took care of me, and watched over me and loved me.
The woman who gave me birth calls me every now and then. I appreciate her nine months of pregnancy. I am cordial to her and polite as my mother taught me to be... but this woman is not my mother.
I don't understand adoptees who whine about being adopted.
My mother "saved" me from a lifetime of foster homes and aimlessness. MY mother loves me as much as her biological children. I am her daughter and she is my mother. The blood that runs through me was nurtured by her, the brain in my head was cultivated with her help, the genes in my body were kept alive and thriving through her attention. My mother taught me self-respect, praised me and gave me self-esteem. My mother showed me how to love humanity and never be afraid to rail against injustice.
I may have genetic coding from the woman who gave me birth, but it wouldn't matter much without my mother, who taught me how to make these genes MEAN something.
